Hey Folks,
Welcome to August. For a lot of people, August is the beginning of the end of summer; there are county fairs, it’s the beginning of school season, and fall is just around the corner with its corn mazes and cooler weather. For us too, it’s the beginning of the end; it’s the peak of our growing season, and would be easy to miss that we’re actually headed towards winter, and smaller herd sizes.
Here at Mirror Image Farms, peak season means that we’re getting rid of animals faster than they’re being born. We’ve slowly begun sending steers to the butcher, after their last summer of grass fattened them out, but in September, we’ll start sending steers in earnest. Four steers go in September, and the rest will be butchered in October, November and December. If you would like to claim one of those steers or make a beef order for your freezer, let us know.
Over winter, our herd will be reduced to 6 heifers, 3 calves, and 2 yearling steers. However, we did recently expand our herd; Randy, an 11-year old Red Devon bull made himself at home on the pasture. We have 6 heifers that will need bred by the November, and after weighing our options, brought this bull into the herd to do the job. We’re not sure how long he will be with us, but next summer his offspring will be born.
This month we also had a photo shoot with Summercrow Photos. Check out some of our favorites below.
